Three brewing methods that produce genuinely different cups, not just different rituals.
What's Inside
These three methods use the same beans and the same water and produce recognisably different drinks. The difference is filtration and contact time.
French Press
How it works: full immersion, four minutes, then a metal mesh filter.
In the cup: heavy body, more oils, more sediment. Flavours read as rounder and less distinct. Great for dark roasts; can taste muddy with delicate light roasts.
Effort: very low. Dump, pour, wait, press.
Cleanup: the worst of the three. Wet grounds everywhere.
Forgiveness: high. Hard to ruin badly, though a coarse grind matters — fine particles slip through the mesh.
Pour-Over
How it works: water passes through a paper filter and a bed of coffee over two to three minutes.
In the cup: clean and bright. Paper traps oils and fine particles, so individual flavours separate clearly. Acidity reads as fruit rather than harshness.
Effort: medium. It demands attention for three minutes.
Cleanup: easy. Lift the filter and bin it.
Forgiveness: low. Grind size, pour rate and water temperature all show up in the cup.
AeroPress
How it works: immersion for a short time, then pressure through a paper filter.
In the cup: between the other two. More body than pour-over, more clarity than French press. Extremely adjustable.
Effort: low. One or two minutes, minimal technique.
Cleanup: the easiest. The grounds come out as a puck.
Forgiveness: very high. It is the hardest of the three to make genuinely undrinkable coffee with.
Choosing
- Want a rich, heavy cup and low effort: French press
- Want clarity and fruit-forward flavours, and enjoy the ritual: pour-over
- Want one cup, fast, with almost no cleanup, and lots of room to experiment: AeroPress
- Travel or office: AeroPress, clearly
- Making coffee for four people: French press
Verdict
AeroPress is the best first choice for most people: forgiving, fast, easy to clean, and adaptable. Pour-over rewards the attention it demands. French press makes the heaviest cup and the biggest mess.
